November is a beautiful time of year to visit rural Thailand. The rainy season has ended, the rice fields are lush and emerald green, and the villagers are busy with the harvest. Mid-day temperatures average in the 80s and the lighting shifts throughout the day are a photographer's dream.
During the first few days, we adjust to the time change by exploring Bangkok's markets, canals, and temples. Then we hit the road for Ubon Ratchathani, 630 kms directly east of Bangkok toward the Mekong River border with Laos. We stop for dawn and dusk shoots of ancient Khmer temples in Ayutthaya and Buriram. In Ubon we get a sense of provincial life and then of monastic life when we stay at a nearby forest temple as guests of the Abbot. Our home-stay in rice-farming village on the Mekong promises intimate exposure to rural life as our gracious hosts share their homes and lives with us. A highlight will be our village service project - producing a photo exhibit with the villagers.
